Thomas Tuchel Wants Jude Bellingham's Fire So Long As The Three Lions' Star Leaves His Ego at the Door.
A single omission was enough. A second one and it would have started to look spiteful from Thomas Tuchel, a coach who is extremely shrewd not to know that securing World Cup glory is probably going to require the involvement of the talented midfielder, even if it is also up to the player to blend into the game plans and squad hierarchies required with England now that he is returned to Tuchel's warm embrace.
Tuchel seeks his aggressive mentality, his intensity, but it is about channeling it constructively. Skill is important but the squad understand from past setbacks that there is consequences when stardom prevails. Still, a point has been made.
The midfielder had plenty to reflect on after being left out of the previous squad. He observed the national side qualify at the upcoming World Cup in his absence. He saw the young talent shine as a counterpressing attacking midfielder. He listened as the coach mention loving the team's dynamism and values. Naturally, Bellingham has responded in champion style, finding the back of the net for Real Madrid against Barcelona and the Italian side. His selection was inevitable; a second snub would have put his tournament chances precarious.
The hope is that the manager will have a Bellingham focused on pressuring the opposition rather than his own colleagues. After all, in purely sporting terms, there is no advantage to picking a fight with a top talent in the world. The ideal scenario is that his period out of the team has shown him that representing the national team is a valuable, precarious thing. The coach, on his side, can now throw a protective shield for the youngster after showing that he is willing to take tough decisions.
“There is no problem with him, there is no problem with the character,” Tuchel said. “Bellingham just has that aggression. It takes that kind of fire to reach the heights that he reached. We all must help him and create an environment which he can channel that intensity against rivals and in pursuit of success we are working towards as a team.”
Bellingham took up the spotlight at the team news conference for the upcoming meaningless matches versus one opponent and the other. Who else? Well, how about another talent? This is another prodigious playmaker in need of support and direction. He has been absent for England since March and has struggled to perform well recently but Tuchel had to consider the player after how he played in his club's victory versus Borussia Dortmund this week.
The question, however, is how to use the attacking talents at the team's disposal. Morgan Rogers and Eze have earned their places and there will be a good argument to include another youngster once he recovers from a ongoing injury. Would taking multiple creators to the World Cup be an overkill? The previous manager failed to discover the right blend at Euro 2024. He made concessions by squeezing Foden and Bellingham into the starting lineup, cramping Harry Kane’s style in the process.
It seems unlikely the current manager making the same mistake if it hurts the offensive structure. There is room for a single playmaker, with fast wide players on the wings. Clear roles is beneficial. Bellingham is selected as a central attacker. The new call-up, selected for the first occasion, is a No 8 and the returning Adam Wharton will battle another player as a defensive midfielder. There will also be no position on the wing for the City star, who has to be through the middle. Tuchel wants him near the striker. “It is illogical to ask Phil: ‘We want you on the pitch but there’s no space in your preferred role, can you play left wing? Or the other flank?’” he said. “He is to feature in the advanced midfield role, in the middle of the pitch. I have this idea regarding him for years. In my view it fits his style best.”
He agreed there are times when the player has not looked himself in an England shirt. “You feel almost like, ‘Does he like it?’ And someone of his caliber who has this childish joy to play football, then obviously something is not right, be it his role, the setup, it's unclear.
“I think he is also so used to playing for his club in a specific system, to have a clear task. I think he benefits greatly from clear instructions. What is my position? Where exactly am I to receive the ball? Where am I supposed to push the tempo? What are my to defend?
Tuchel discussed one star making runs for tap-ins and the other scoring goals from 18 yards. He said he has a longlist of 60 players. Several players, others, the goalkeeper and the midfielder have been omitted. A new face is rewarded for his good displays for City at left-back. Intrigue is high.
Leaving out of Ollie Watkins means there is no direct replacement for the captain in this squad. Interestingly, Tuchel suggested deploying the playmaker as a false 9 versus Serbia or Albania. Anthony Gordon, Marcus Rashford, Bellingham and the winger are alternatives should Kane be absent. Since the place is booked, this is an opportunity for testing tactics.
Meanwhile, it is also a moment to get the understanding with his teammate flowing. It's surprising that one must look back to Bellingham setting up the captain to net in an international match against the Scots in over a year ago to find the one and only time in 35 games for the national team when the pair linked up for a goal. Tuchel will be aware that Kane and Bellingham only exchanged the ball a single time during England’s draws with Denmark and Slovenia at the Euros. The connection is lacking.
“This is where at some point it falls to the duty of the individuals,” Tuchel said. He does not shy away to be blunt. There is still a sense of the player under scrutiny. He cannot even be assured to start against the upcoming opponents. Tuchel desires him committed but he will be monitoring him closely. Leave the ego outside. It will make a very strong squad into an more effective one.
