Chelsea's Boss Maresca Describes Lead-Up Time as His 'Most Difficult 48 Hours' at the Club

Enzo Maresca joined Chelsea from Leicester during July of last year.

Chelsea tactician Enzo Maresca stated that the run-up to Saturday's victory against Everton constituted "the most challenging 48 hours" he has experienced at Stamford Bridge.

The 44-year-old offered a puzzling comment in his post-match interview despite notching a 2-0 win at Stamford Bridge courtesy of goals from Cole Palmer and Malo Gusto.

Those three precious points lifted Chelsea once again into the Premier League's top four, perhaps improving the atmosphere following a defeat to Atalanta in the Champions League that had stretched the side's drought without a win to consecutive outings.

But, when questioned about the full-back's assist and overall display, Maresca surprisingly divulged his displeasure over the previous two days within the organization.

"The way the squad want to learn has been excellent and this is the reason why I praise them - because with numerous challenges, they are performing admirably after a tricky week," he stated.

"From the moment I arrived at the club, the previous 48 hours have been the toughest because many people didn't support us."

When pushed further on his meaning, the ex- Leicester City manager elaborated: "Most difficult 48 hours since I joined the club because people failed to back me and the team."

When asked if he meant people within at Chelsea, he responded: "Broadly speaking. In general," before specifying when queried if it was directed towards fans or the press: "I adore the fans and we are extremely pleased with the fans."

Injury & Suspension Woes

Maresca also drew attention to Chelsea's ongoing injury and disciplinary issues, noting they had been without key forward Cole Palmer for a large portion of the season, as well as losing linchpin Moises Caicedo to a three-game ban and forward Liam Delap to two serious injuries.

"I really praise the players and the squad because we played 16 Premier League games, five of them without Moises Caicedo, 11 of them minus Cole Palmer, almost all of them without Liam Delap," he said.

"And this squad, regardless of who is on the pitch, they are performing fantastic. Today was 5 games in 12 days so for sure when you see Cole Palmer playing, we have said many times that he's our best player but we play the vast majority of the season minus our best player.

"We play 5 games in the Premier League without Moises Caicedo. This is the explanation why I'm so happy for the players and it's something that I would want people externally to acknowledge because the commitment from the players is outstanding."

Chelsea's win over Everton cemented their position in 4th place in the Premier League standings, with a Carabao Cup quarter-final clash at Cardiff and a league journey to Newcastle to come next week.

Speculation Regarding Maresca's Comments

It was not immediately clear who or what prompted Maresca to describe the past 48 hours as the most difficult of his time as Chelsea manager.

In that period, the coach had returned with his backroom team and players from his native Italy, held a training session at Cobham, attended a pre-match news conference where he appeared relaxed, and engineered a win over an high-flying Everton team.

It was hard to discern whether any particular press stories had irked him, if online comments played a role, or if it was something more significant from inside the hierarchy at Stamford Bridge.

Maresca specifically took care to deny that it was an issue related to the club's fans, a section of which have still have yet to fully warm to him since his arrival from Leicester in July 2024.
