"As an answer to this strong advancement, the tobacco industry is pushing back with new nicotine devices, actively focusing on young people. Governments must act more rapidly and more vigorously in implementing established tobacco-control regulations," the representative added.
The vaping numbers are a projection since some states - 109 in sum, and several in Africa and Asian regions - fail to collect statistics.
According to the study, as of recent February this period, at bare minimum 86 million e-cigarette consumers were mature individuals, mostly in high-income states.
And at least 15 million adolescents aged 13 and 15 presently use e-cigarettes, per surveys from 123 states.
While many states have made efforts to establish e-cigarette policies to address underage vaping in recent years, by the close of 2024, 62 states still had no regulation in place, and 74 states had no minimum age at which e-cigarettes can be purchased, reports the public health organization.
Simultaneously, tobacco usage has been declining - from an approximated 1.38 billion individuals in 2000 to 1.2 billion in 2024.
Frequency of tobacco consumption among women dropped the most - from 11% in 2010 to 6.6% in 2024.
For males, the decrease was from 41.4% in 2010 to 32.5% in 2024.
But a fifth of adults worldwide yet consumes tobacco.
Cigarette consumption is linked to several illnesses, including cancer.
Experts state vaping is significantly less dangerous than cigarettes, and can help you stop smoking. It is discouraged for non-smokers.
E-cigarettes eliminate burning tobacco and do not create tar or CO, a pair of the most damaging elements in tobacco vapors. They include nicotine, which can be dependency-creating.
