2026 Declared the Age of the Croaking Craze.
My key observation from the recent Day of the Devs showcase was a delight to watch, my primary conclusion was perhaps unexpected: I am certain that 2026 will be the definitive year for frogs in video games.
A surprising total of five of the featured titles—Frog Sqwad, Stretchmancer, Unshine Arcade, Awaysis, and Big Hops—prominently include these hoppy characters. Given that a gathering of frogs is called an army, it feels they are staking their claim.
From Classic Icons to Modern Mania
Frogs are far from new to the world of games. Looking back at titles like Frogger to the beloved froggy chair in Animal Crossing, they have enjoyed a niche presence. However, their popularity has markedly exploded in recent times.
A cursory search for "frog game" on Steam reveals an absolute deluge of results. While, some of these are novelty titles, a great many are serious Frog Games.
Charting the Croak Comeback
To quantify this trend, I conducted a thorough analysis into the recent history of amphibian-themed gaming on Steam. My approach was admittedly subjective, focusing on games with frogs in the title or featured in screenshots.
The results paint a clear picture: a consistent rise from less than 20 titles in 2020 to close to 60 in 2025.
This notable escalation prompts the question: why the sudden leap? The creature's rising status in the public consciousness is also visible elsewhere, such as the resurgence of Frog and Toad as Gen Z icons. But, the wave in gaming appears uniquely pronounced.
The Allure of Amphibian Mechanics
Honestly, this is a shift I can fully endorse. Frogs offer built-in design advantages for game developers.
- Unique Characters: They are perfectly suited to be designed as endearing characters that often become a standout feature in any game.
- Unique Gameplay: Their elastic legs and grappling abilities enable a host of creative gameplay ideas.
A number of the featured titles smartly employ these traits. Examples include the tongue-based traversal in Big Hops and the extra-long limb puzzles of Stretchmancer.
The Leap Into 2026
So, what can we expect in 2026? Given five frog games confirmed for release before the year has even started—and the chance for more—the evidence suggests for it to be the largest year so far.
Should these games are received positively—and traditionally, games from this showcase often do—we could very well be on the verge of a true frog gaming renaissance.
